Arkansas

This post will include universities and community colleges within driving distance of Newport, Arkansas, where my mother-in-law lives in anticipation of the time when Mary needs to be closer to her mom.

University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Fayetteville is 248 miles from Newport.  The jobs listing is here.

Non-Discrimination Policy

The University of Arkansas prohibits discrimination against and harassment of its students, faculty, and staff, or any applicant for employment. It is the policy of the University of Arkansas to provide an educational and work environment in which thought, creativity, and growth are stimulated, and in which individuals are free to realize their full potential through equal opportunity. The university should be a place of work and study for students, faculty, and staff, that is free of all forms of discrimination, sexual intimidation and exploitation. Therefore, the University of Arkansas is committed to providing equal opportunity for all students and applicants for admission and for all employees and applicants for employment regardless of race, age, gender, sex (including pregnancy), religion, national origin, marital or parental status, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or any other characteristic protected under applicable federal or state law. In addition, discrimination in employment on the basis of genetic information is prohibited.

The history of LGBT movements on the UA campus indicates that the current LGBT organization is called "PRIDE" but repeated searches using various keywords failed.  In fact, it appears that the SafeZone program is the only functioning university-sponsored program for LGBT students.

Arkansas State University, Jonesboro

Jonesboro is 45 miles from Newport.  The jobs listing is here.

Having searched every way possible for the non-discrimination statement, I concluded that sexual orientation is NOT included in their university policies, nor is gender identity or gender expression. However, there are three registered student organizations that include LGBT students, faculty, or staff in their descriptions:  A-State Equality, A-State Feminist Union, and Gay Straight Alliance.

In searching for "sexual orientation" on the ASU website, there appear to be several attempts by the faculty senate to include sexual orientation and/or gender identity in non-discrimination statements. But as far as I can tell, those recommendations were voted down.

University of Central Arkansas, Conway

Conway is 89 miles from Newport.  The jobs listing is here.

Notice of Nondiscrimination

The University of Central Arkansas is an affirmative action/equal opportunity institution dedicated to attracting and supporting a diverse student, faculty and staff population through enhanced multicultural learning environments and opportunities.  In keeping with its non-discrimination policy in employment, admissions and other functions and programs, the University considers employees and students on the basis of individual merit and will not discriminate against a person on the basis of gender, race or color, ethnicity, religion, spiritual beliefs, national origin, age, familial status, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, disability, political beliefs, intellectual perspective, genetic information, military status, or other factors irrelevant to participation in its programs.
UCA complies with Title IX and all other federal laws and regulations that prohibit discrimination in education programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance.

P.R.I.S.M. is the queer student, faculty, and staff organization formed in 1997 to serve the UCA community.

University of Arkansas, Little Rock

Little Rock is 89 miles from Newport.  The jobs listing is here.

Policy:

It is the policy of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock to provide equal employment opportunity to all qualified persons; to prohibit discrimination against any employee or applicant for employment because of race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, marital or parental status, veteran’s status, or disability, and to promote the full realization of equal employment opportunity through a positive, continuing program of affirmative action.

The Alliance appears to be the student, faculty, and staff organization at UALR.

Arkansas Tech University, Russellville

Russellville is 136 miles from Newport.  The jobs listing is here.

Non-Discrimination Policy Arkansas Tech University does not discriminate on the basis of color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, age, national origin, religion, veteran status, genetic information, or disability in any of its practices, policies, or procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, employment, admissions, educational services, programs or activities which it operates, or financial aid.

There is an Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion who is responsible for LGBT Pride Month activities as well as other multicultural activities, but I found no evidence of a queer student, faculty, and staff organization.

Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia

Magnolia is 228 miles from Newport.  The jobs listing is here.  Neither sexual orientation nor gender identity/expression are included in the non-discrimination or affirmative action statements of this university.

Harding University, Searcy

Searcy is 41 miles from Newport.  The jobs listing is here.  Employees must be "active members of the Church of Christ" ...  and support the "goals of Christian education" ...

An Equal Opportunity Employer

Harding University is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not unlawfully discriminate in employment on the basis of race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, age, sex, disability or prior military service. Preference is given to persons whose lives exhibit respect for and support of the goals of Christian education. Unlawful discrimination is prohibited by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and other applicable laws.

Henderson State University, Arkadelphia

Arkadelphia is 156 miles from Newport.  The jobs listing is here.

Henderson State University has an affirmative action policy that includes equal employment opportunity and non-discrimination by race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, veteran's status, or disability in the recruitment of faculty and administrative personnel. University of Arkansas, Monticello

Monticello is 178 miles from Newport.  The jobs listing is here.  UAMont absolutely does not include sexual orientation or gender identity/expression in any of its human resource policies, although sexual orientation is included in the School of Education diversity plan.

University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff (HBCU; 1890)

Pine Bluff is 143 miles from Newport.  The jobs listing is here.  I could find no evidence of a queer student, faculty, and staff organization.

Non-Discriminatory Policy

UAPB is committed to providing an environment that emphasizes the dignity and worth of every member of its community and that is free from harassment and discrimination based upon race, color, religion, national origin, creed, service in the uniformed services (as defined in state and federal law), veteran status, sex, age, political ideas, marital or family status, pregnancy, physical or mental disability, genetic information, gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation.  Such an environment is necessary to a healthy learning, working, and living atmosphere because discrimination and harassment undermine human dignity and the positive connection among all people at our University.  Acts of discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct, stalking, and retaliation will be addressed consistent with this policy.

University of Arkansas, Fort Smith

Fort Smith is 217 miles from Newport.  The jobs listing is here.  There is a chapter of PRIDE at UAFS, but very little was available on the university website.

TITLE IX STATUTE AND UAFS POLICY STATEMENT

Title IX Statute
Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 is the landmark legislation that bans sex discrimination in schools that receive any Federal money. Title IX is often thought of as a law that applies only to athletics programs. In fact, Title IX is much broader than Athletics and applies to all or nearly all programs at UAFS. It reads:
“No person in the U.S. shall, on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in, or denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal aid.”

UAFS Policy StatementThe University of Arkansas Fort Smith is committed to providing an environment that emphasizes the dignity and worth of every member of its community and that is free from harassment and discrimination based upon race, color, religion, national origin, service in the uniformed services (as defined in state and federal law), veteran status, sex, age, pregnancy, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability or genetic information. Such an environment is necessary to a healthy learning, working and living atmosphere. Accordingly, all acts of discrimination, harassment, retaliation and sexual misconduct as defined by this Policy are prohibited.
