Consortium jobs added March 10

University of Richmond (Richmond, Virginia)
Associate Director of Common Ground for LGBTQ Campus Life
(funding pending for Position Number 501838)

What does UR's non-discrimination policy look like?
On the homepage for UR ( www.richmond.edu ) at the bottom of the page, there is a link for "Legal Notices."  In the middle of that page is the following:
The University prohibits discrimination and harassment against applicants, students, faculty, or staff on the basis of race, religion, national or ethnic origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, disability, status as a veteran or any classification protected by local, state or federal law.

This position requires a Ph.D. and/or a master's with significant experience in research or teaching "in the field" (I think they mean sexual minority studies, huh?).  Ah, now they say, "Expertise in gender identity/expression, sexuality, and queer issues, including intersections among them, intersection with other dimensions of difference (e.g., race, class, ability), and psychological, interpersonal, policy, and social dimensions."  This is a scholarly position.

Then they go on to say, "Experience in community building or organizing, advising and counseling students, superior writing and public speaking abilities, knowledge of assessment principles and execution, and experience in strategic planning."  This is an administrative and activist position.

Note:  The University of Richmond is in the process of becoming a member of the Consortium.  Good for UR!

There is bad news for Virginia, however, since it is a DOMA state.  Virginia has constitutional amendment defining marriage, as well as, statutes that prohibit same-sex marriage.

STATUTES

Marriage Protection Act (1997)
Marriage between persons of same sex.
A marriage between persons of the same sex is prohibited. Any marriage entered into by persons of the same sex in another state or jurisdiction shall be void in all respects in Virginia and any contractual rights created by such marriage shall be void and unenforceable.
Va. Code § 20-45.2
CONSTITUTION
Only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this Commonwealth and its political subdivisions. This Commonwealth and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance, or effects of marriage. Nor shall this Commonwealth or its political subdivisions create or recognize another union, partnership, or other legal status to which is assigned the rights, benefits, obligations, qualities, or effects of marriage.
(Virginia Constitution, approved by 57% of voters on Tuesday, November 7, 2006)

Colby College, Waterville, Maine
Director of the Gender and Sexual Diversity Program and Associate/Assistant Director of Pugh Center

What does CC have to say in their non-discrimination policy?
Non-discrimination
Colby is a private, coeducational liberal arts college that admits students and makes personnel decisions on the basis of the individual's qualifications to contribute to Colby's educational objectives and institutional needs. The principle of not discriminating on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, age, parental or marital status, national or ethnic origin, political beliefs, or disability unrelated to job or course of study requirements is consistent with the mission of a liberal arts college and the law. Colby is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer and operates in accordance with federal and state laws regarding non-discrimination.

"Candidates with an earned Ph.D. may have additional opportunitites to partner on the development and execution of diversity related coursework."  This could be a scholarly position, but it is mostly an administrative/activist position.

Note:  Colby College is becoming a member of the Consortium.  Good for CC!

There is also a ban against same-sex marriage in the state of Maine!
Same sex marriage prohibited. Persons of the same sex may not contract marriage.
(19-A Maine Revised Statutes Ann. section 701)
